For new couples who are considering marriage or know they will be married, couple counseling can give a wonderful head-start on learning marital skills. John Gottman’s research showed clearly that there is a relationship “toolbox” which successfully married partners know about. I have taught many premarital couples these skills and even have given them homework to keep these habits going outside the office – habits that can enhance their relationship for a lifetime.
Sometimes partners are wondering whether their relationship is one they want to commit to. Some issues may have surfaced which seem insurmountable, yet they don’t want to give up on each other. I have helped many couples in this situation clarify the predicaments before them, getting to the “heart of the matter”, so they can make decisions based on their fundamental truths and feelings rather than reactive emotions. In place of ambivalence about the relationship, they go forward knowing each other much better on a realistic level and they can make their decision on more solid ground.
