Therapy begins with a thorough assessment and interview...

Couples at the Couples Clinic Marin undergo a thorough assessment process, which includes a comprehensive written questionnaire and oral history interview, both about your present relationship and your individual family backgrounds.  I may schedule individual interviews with each partner if I feel it necessary.  I will then meet with you to give you my assessment of your strengths and those parts of your relationship which need improvement.  We will then decide together on a treatment plan which will work for you.  Sessions are either one or one and a half hours in length depending on your needs.  Sessions are usually held at weekly intervals, especially in the beginning of treatment.

Couples at the Clinic are often asked to do simple, straightforward “homework” between sessions in order to help their relationship become stronger.  Clients often report that these exercises are fun and easy to do – in fact, they find that they want to do them again and again because they really help.  And this is just the idea: to keep building new and positive relationship habits!

The duration of your counseling with me will depend on how you and your partner see the progress in working on the problems you come in with.  I will keep thorough notes on our sessions and be able to tell you about the progress I see and remind you about what we have been working on and the issues you presented in the beginning.  There is no requirement, of course, to remain in counseling if you are not making progress.  However, I am willing to discuss with you what I think may be in the way of a better outcome, and help you with any alternatives.
